They certainly ring many bells with their 60’s pop
style, charming tunes. The vocals harmonize and chime happily, crescendo-ing
in perfect time with the drums. This upbeat five-piece migrated to Brooklyn
from Philly, and their sound couldn’t be more appropriate for the New
York music scene. The keys blare and the guitar twangs, as their music bleeds
similar sounds to the Beach Boys, The Strokes and The Shins. There’s much
more to them than just those three influences, it’s possibly some of the
most jovial music I’ve heard in quite a while that carries any merit to
it. They croon and bop with shamelessly sweet tunes and it’s nearly impossible
not to cheer up. It’s like the movie “That Thing You Do” only
better and without Tom Hanks as their manager. So dig in, be logical, get happy.
If you had to cover an album of another five member
band which band would it be?
On any other day, we'd probably pick something like... “Hail
to the Thief.” It's been a strange week though something seems off with
the cosmos. We're going to shoot high and take on “Permanent Vacation”
by Aerosmith. It's got “Rag Doll” AND “Dude (Looks Like a
Lady)” on it. That's enough reason to listen to 10 other filler tracks
from, um, yeah... Aerosmith.
When and how did the members of The Canon Logic meet
and become who you are today?
Tim and Josh met up freshmen year at college and started writing
music together. A year later, Mark answered a craigslist ad they put out. Sean,
a childhood friend of Mark's gets thrown into the mix some months down the line.
Eventually, Mike pulls a Mark, and finds everyone else on craigslist. It's a
Canon Logic miracle! The five members thrive as a unit but become fed up with
the aching jock-rock dominated Philadelphia music scene, and move up to New
York City, which is where they reside today. There's obviously a lot more that
went into the last 3 or so years, but we'll save that for the VH1 special.
What artists and styles would you say influence your
music?
Well, we definitely get compared to the Beach Boys somewhat
frequently, but that might be our own doing (it was mentioned on our website
for a while). On the vocal end of things, a lot of classic rock acts are responsible
for our harmonic tendencies Queen, CSNY, Beatles, Beach Boys. Musically, the
five of us converge on Radiohead and some classic rock, but branch out from
there.
What has been the most exciting show/venue/city you've
played so far? What are you guys most excited about for these upcoming months?
We've played at a couple high-profile shows on a big stage
here or there (Warped Tour, SXSW, the occasional college fest). On paper, those
are the big ones. The shows that stand out most for us, however, are the ones
in our hometown where we're in our element and playing to a capacity crowd of
fans and close friends. Recently, we topped off a Monday night residency at
Pianos in the LES with a packed house. That felt good (until we had to go into
work the next morning). Playing shows is only half the fun though. What we're
looking forward the most over the next few months is focusing on promoting our
debut full-length album. That, and making a splash at CMJ in October.
