Emanuel & the Fear
here comes the fear again
by Gina Alioto

Engaged in various jobs in the film industry to learn about film composition, Emanuel’s work on a project at FOX inspired him to form an orchestra-style band. Emanuel and the Fear, avid fans of The Dessner Brothers, performed first in January 2008 with their band of guitars, drums, bass, violins, flute, cello, trombone, trumpet, piano, and a synthesizer. Now scheduling some small tours around the US, the band credits their wonderful European booking agent and publicists who are designing a tour for early spring when they will release their debut LP in the states.

Describe challenges an 11-piece band in New York City encounters. Emanuel Ayvas: Sound people usually hate our guts until they see that we're not unfriendly. Then they just hate our guts under their breath because we're making them have to do more work than they usually do. We usually don't fit on stages here, which I guess is good because people in the crowd usually laugh at us, forget to leave, and get stuck listening to our set. Then, we rock their socks off and they're happy we suckered them into staying. Also, it’s not the easiest thing to get all of our band members in one place at one time and it’s expensive. But I've been really lucky to have such wonderful musicians and supporters dedicated to helping the project grow. An advantage of our large group is the amount of people we consistently bring out to our shows. You figure, if every band member can bring 10 friends, we’d have 110 folks at every show.

If you had an unlimited budget… Actually, I’m currently organizing our album release party, when Emanuel and the Fear will play a set for a full 50-person orchestra, for which we will do all the arrangements and charts. I plan to feature young composers, including myself and other members of the band among said composers, each writing our own 10 minute symphonies. I envision taking our whole production all over the globe each time expanding, becoming more elaborate and exciting. And I'd love to involve dancers, lights, videos, live painting, and animation and a famous composer type rockstar like Sufjan Stevens or Rufus Wainwright to inspire young musicians. We intend to donate all profits to charity. So, if anyone reading this is interested, let us know!

Is there an underlying message in your lyrics or are you focused strictly on entertaining? Just to speak about what I know about my world and perspective in a way that everyone can understand what I'm saying and relate the stories and images painted. I guess the main goal is to make people feel something from what's coming out of this. Whatever it may be doesn't really matter, as long as I’m provoking a soul feeling with everything.
