Whether it's 70’s boogie-woogie riffery in 7/4 time,
tranced-out minimal stomps, or ayahuascan freakouts, La Otracina covers a lot
of ground-often in one song. The name is rumored to mean &quotthe other scene."
If this is true, it's a wonder they're not called the La Otracinas. The band
consists of founder/drummer/singer, Adam Kriney, bass sixist/ pedal sage 1/recording
guru, Evan Sobel, and guitarist/pedal sage 2, Phil Ortanez.
La Otracina are old-fashioned in the sense that they are total road dogs. With
a DIY-ethic that includes self-booked tours, luscious handmade CDRs, and weather
worn sleeping bags, La Otracina already has or will be devastating your town.
They will be armed with effects pedals. Your vibe will be their nourishment.
Most of all, you will be blown away in the traditional and futuristic sense.
Here’s a short glimpse into the unique world of La Otracina.
Being shamans of recorded and live realms, what are
your goals for these two representations?
In the rehearsal space, we write with constraints of what we
can achieve in a live setting with ease. There is no use writing to everyone’s
absolute limit, because it’ll be impossible to replicate with finesse.
In the studio, we create music with those compositions as the framework and
go nuts, exploring any and all ideas. We enjoy taking our live music to new
sonic places on our records. Conversely, we like taking our recordings to more
extreme energy levels while performing. Our goal is to universally blow your
mind.
The effectiveness of the pedal sages is like a fairy-dust
light switch to the brain. How are these pedal runs put together?
We use pedals to create different landscapes within our music.
We slide between sounds, constantly shifting moods and dynamics. Pedals are
a way to give each section/idea its own feel, to create a true flowing story.
We spend a lot of time working on the perfect pedal combinations. It is laborious,
but eventually quite a payoff!
Your packaging aesthetic perfectly complements the
aural bliss. How does the packaging fit into the whole?
We have always salivated over lush album art. Be it terror
inducing metal, or the modernism of classic jazz. We try to create a visual
counterpart that tells its own tale and supports the sounds within. We want
the art to be gorgeous and for others to salivate over it!
Got any basic touring advice?
Remain a team on the road, don’t get divisive. Eating
well is of extreme importance cause we like to party at night! Everyone needs
access to their vices so we can all feel good, as long as that happens, things’ll
be alright. Some folks are made for the road. Some ain’t. It’s floors
across the galaxy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!
Looking into Otracina’s crystal ball, what’s
the future?
We make music and organically create our current sound as a
mixture of what musics we have played before, what music we are currently studying,
and what music we think we want to be making. We never actually achieve that.
We just end up sounding like us!
We explore many realms of heavy based musics, incorporate ideas from jazz, modern
composition, etc. People think we’re just metal or psych or prog. Anyone
who cares to listen will hear a different thing. We’ve always been all
of these things. We just get bored. So we morph, we are wizards, you know? Most
folks can’t jive with that. Miles Davis said, “what are we supposed
to do, wait around for them to get it?”
