Feature: Sapiens Camp with Charlie Nadler
Last Friday The Sapiens made our debut at The Empty Bottle. We’ve been looking forward to getting in there for a long time, and we weren’t disappointed. That was a great crowd, there was a ton of energy, and it didn’t slow down when JC Brooks and The Uptown Sound took the stage after us; those guys had the whole room dancing the entire set!
So... what now? Well, it’s November, it’s getting effing cold, Chicago winter is about here. Therefore, obviously what we should do next is go stay in a log cabin out in Shabbona State Park for the weekend… right?
Shabbona is a lake not too far west of Aurora, and it’s where we’ve decided to hold our next Sapiens Camp. Sapiens Camp is the name we apply to any extended period of time (read: more than one day) that we withdraw from society more than usual and workshop new songs; this time the name is a little more fitting since we’ll also be, well, camping.
There’s definitely something to the idea of isolating yourself to just write or paint or make enormous troll dolls that resemble Steven Segal, depending on what you’re into. True we’ll only be there for a weekend, and yes it’ll probably be cold as balls, but all the best thinking gets done in winter anyway (don’t look that up, it’s true). And while it would be nice to have several months to play the Bon Iver game and grow burly beards and really get our hermit on, often the best things happen when there isn’t the luxury of a relaxed schedule, when there’s a little pressure; we’ve definitely found it to be true in the studio.
Speaking of Steven Segal, we recently purchased a piece of technology called “the video camera”. Read about Evan and Dave’s fun times buying this thing on the Sapiens blog. And here is a bit of our first footage, taken from Friday’s show. - Charlie Nadler
