Dorian Spencer Takes On Reality Competition Show

Dorian Spencer advanced to the semi finals of MSG network’s TV reality show about NYC subway musicians. On Aug. 24 he will once again battle it out for a spot in the finals. The winner will play at Madison Square Garden or one of its venues!

Dorian has beaten out eight street performers, ranging from singer, song writers to instrumentalists and a six-piece band. His enrapturing voice, sincere lyrics, and the finger-picking style he uses to create infectious melodies gave him an edge from the start. At MSG’s open call, Dorian mesmerized onlookers with a song called Balance and soon had them chanting to the politically themed lyrics that take an honest look at the world.

Dorian has two full-length albums, Garden and Stone to Stone. Both albums hit hard, presenting personal reflections along side his views on the current state of affairs.

Catch Dorian on NYC Sound Tracks on TV at 8pm or on www.msg.com/soundtracks. The finalists will be chosen by popular vote, which stays open for 24 hours from the start of the show at www.msg.com/votesoundtracks.

Watch and help this rising artist work his way to the top.

"The revival of dark Electronic"

NYC Based Alternative / Electronic duo turned Alternative / Electronic group Electric Chariot, are putting on performances in the city to promote their debut project. Fusing synths, live drums and soaring ethereal vocals... The 11 track album "Signs And Illusions" delves into the dark edge of electronic composition, touching upon topics such as denial, regret, self acceptance, love and hurt. "like riding in a car with Portishead while Harry Gregson Williams hangs from the car door with Trent Reznor sipping coffee at the near by bus stop" the material receives the live treatment by talented musicians Anees Alhamyari (Guitars), Fred Marras (Bass) and Gabriel Schwartz (drums) who have become apart of the Electronic outfit that began with singer / songwriter Victoria Schwartz and Keyboardist/Engineer Dennis Natal. Their latest performance will be held @ Arlene's Grocery This saturday night Aug 23rd at 10pm. They invite everyone in the NYC area to come hear the music and enjoy a great night in the LES area of nyc.

New Pop. New Indie.

Bears Repeating is a two person American indie band, based in New York City. The band consists of Andrew Contompasis (Lead Vocals, Guitar, Piano) and Jeff Ferrara (Vocals, Drums) with help from other musicians such as Kyle Kessler and Duran Rose. The band began as a solo-project in December 2007 and gained early success with the single “Doctors.” Their unique sound comes from the fact that they regularly tune their instruments a half-step-down and have never played using a bass guitar. Even when Kyle plays live with the band, there are still no bass guitars used. Bears Repeating is scheduled to release their debut EP (First Thing’s First) on August 1, 2008.

The term ‘Bears Repeating’ is used when something being said is important enough to say (or write) again, in the hope that the statement is understood by the audience.

WHOOPING CRANE says "WATT'S UP!"

If you've been wringing your hands and waiting for a band who knows how to boogie, ten-wheel-drive style, evoking the same reaction that you get every time you blast "Black Betty" or “Hot Smoke and Sassafras” through a pair of 12" Orange speakers in your candy-apple-blue '71 Javelin, wring no more! Brooklyn power-trio WHOOPING CRANE provides two chances to catch their cerebral psych and hot chrome-plated boogie this week! The first on Thurs. Aug. 21 at Cake Shop on Ludlow St. with the very mighty (and most likely very high) FEDERALE and again on Friday at UNION POOL in Williamsburg with two of Brooklyn's finest head-trippers WHITE CLAM and TRAVELING CIRCLE! Since their debut in February, the group has recorded with Mitch Rackin of HEAVY HANDS producing and will be returning to the studio to lay down an EPs worth of tracks in September, so check the band's Myspace page for release party details! Hang loose, stay gold, don’t let the jaguar put you on hold!

My Other Friend Live at Cake Shop

My Other Friend is a Brooklyn-based rock trio. The band is comprised of long-time couple Andy Simmons and Holly MacGibbon and their good friend Eli Luntz. They write guitar and synth driven songs that explore life through tales of death, love and times now forgotten. These ideas manifest into their texture-filled songs, creating ethereal soundscapes and symphonic undertones in their self-categorized modern art rock. You can catch them live at Cake Shop on August 28th at 11pm.

Jamie McLean Band- American Heartache

Singer, songwriter and guitarist Jamie McLean likes to do things his way. From his tenure in the New Orleans based jazz ensemble the Dirty Dozen Brass Band to performances with Elvis Costello, Norah Jones and Widespread Panic to the debut of the Jamie McLean Band, his wailingguitar and flowing pen screams for the spotlight. Backed by a dynamic voice loaded with New Orleans soul and New York City swagger, McLean's transformation from hired gun to front man has been seamless. The songs on his latest release, American Heartache, are entirely Jamie McLean. Showcasing years of musicianship, McLean and company ooze drops of southern roots rock, blues, R&B, funk and soul out of every note. With the rock & roll attitude of the Rolling Stones and Black Crowes combined with the songwriting prowess of Tom Petty and Ryan Adams, the result is the Jamie McLean Band’s latest effort.

Urban Barnyard releases more animal songs 8/30

Urban Barnyard only sings songs about animals in the city. Considering this restriction, their oeuvre betrays a remarkable breadth! Their sound ranges from the anthemic to the sentimental. Watch in wonder as they trade instruments on virtually every song, regardless of which instruments they actually know how to play.

Phoebe Kreutz, Dibson Hoffweiler, Daoud Tyler-Ameen, and Casey Holford have surprised everyone by becoming New York Anti-Folk's tightest indie-rock supergroup ensemble since... okay, so NYAF has never boasted any particularly tight indie-rock bands. But between scene-alumns The Moldy Peaches and Regina Spektor, Urban Barnyard's shockingly fascinating songs about the metropolitan crises of the modern non-human animal stand out as epic accomplishments of sensitivity and weirdo-ism.

The band's new album, Scream Like Human Beings!, produced by bassist Holford, contains sparkly reimaginings of several old favorites such as “Surfin' Sewer Rat” and “Macaque Attack,” while also delving into new territory with the rockist bombast of “Cock Fight” and the delicate harmonies of “Hot Dog.”

Tour Kickoff @ Crash Mansion!

Consider the Source is one voice born of three distinct personalities. Their music is aggressive and yet serene, powerful, and honest. They play what they feel and demand your full attention. Love 'em or hate 'em, the one thing they won't let you do is ignore them. Since its inception, the band has performed throughout New York and much of the east coast. Consider the Source was as well received opening for Wyclef Jean as they were at Klezmer jams on NYC's lower east side. Together they've traveled to the middle and far east to open their ears and expand their musical palate's. Their spicy blend of progressive ethno-fusion proves to be truly genre-bending. On stage, the members embrace and express their deep love and appreciation for their music and influences. From Eastern-European folk melodies and Indian rhythmic cycles to funky rock riffs and break beat drum & bass, audiences can't decide whether to mosh, rave or belly dance.

Needs (EP) out now!!

Spawned from a chance meeting in the summer of 2006, die Kinder is an NYC based duo consisting of vocalist Georgia Haege and multi-instrumentalist Nicholas Bacon. Discovering each other at an automat in the wee hours of the morning after a hard night of drink and debauchery, the two realized their shared passion for cheap eats and electro rock. After an epiphany that they might be long-lost siblings who needed to share their musical leanings with one another, they soon began a songwriting collaboration.

Australian-born Georgia brings the powerhouse vocals, and native New Yorker Nick takes care of the instrumental sides of things, including guitars, keyboards and programming. Both have extensive stage and recording experience: Nick was a long time member of Pilfers (Mojo/Universal) and Lost City Angels (Nitro and Staygold/Universal) and toured the USA, Europe and South America. Georgia fronted The Strines (I.N.S Records), touring the USA, Canada, Europe and Australia.

Wisely deciding to focus on the musical DNA they shared, Georgia and Nick conceived die Kinder (German for "the children").

Drawing from influences such as Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, Blondie and Berlin, to more recent artists such as The Rapture and The Faint, the duo's debut recording titled 'Needs (EP)' was released in May of 2008.

8/15: Folkrock doc MAKING LOVERS & DOLLARS screens

Kicking off the Friday, August 15, festivities of the Summer Antifolk Fest, the Sidewalk Cafe (Ave. A at 6th St., Manhattan) proudly presents the premiere of the musical documentary MAKING LOVERS & DOLLARS, a D.A. Pennebaker-like film which follows Brooklyn folk-rocker Frank Hoier as he records his new album, backed by The Weber Brothers. The hour-long film is directed by Justin Remer (also a musician in Elastic No-No Band) and includes 8 full songs.

You can watch two clips from the movie, HERE and HERE.

Frank Hoier has been compared to Gordon Gano of the Violent Femmes mixed with Bob Dylan, though that might just be because he has a harmonica around his neck. The Weber Brothers are a hard-hitting upbeat old-fashioned American rock band who divide their time between their own gigs and backing up classic rocker Ronnie Hawkins -- best known for recruiting the players who would become The Band. The resulting film of this collaboration unsurprisingly is sort of like DONT LOOK BACK meets THE LAST WALTZ, but with people who you probably don't recognize.

The FREE SCREENING starts promptly at 6:30pm, followed by music acts 'til 1am.

This is the one you've been waiting for

From music reviewer.com-World, meet your next big star. With characters like John Mayer, Jack Johnson, Rocco DeLuca, Matt Costa and Mat Kearney, this is the Golden Age for acoustic / rock / pop music. And in Josh Fix we have yet another ultra-talented, ultra-passionate rising star in a genre where there is always room for new talent. His debut Free At Last is going to be a staple of my rotation for awhile and I am already eagerly awaiting more from this amazingly fresh new artist. Fix is your average singer / songwriter, except for the fact that he plays nearly every instrument on his debut – drums being the exception – and that he also produced every song himself. He was actually seen in the studio with big names in the business stemming from the popularity he gained after landing a spot opening for The Who in 2004, but the man who wrote his own symphony in college opted to go the solo route on the entire album, ensuring that no outside factors could influence his musical voice on this debut. So in essence, the album is all Fix. And I wouldn’t want it any other way. If you are as talented as Fix is, then you don’t need as much input from the outside. He knows where he is going with his music, and his message comes through clearly throughout the record.

Don’t Call Me in the Morning is a great first single from the album, as it is upbeat and has a little bit of what is in every song on the record: amazing piano, amazingly poetic and fun lyrics, and a simple, clear message. This is the first debut album that I’ve heard in a long time that doesn’t have multiple weak tracks. I see potential hit after potential hit on here, ranging from the wacky, upbeat Jethro to the slowed down Free at Last to the insanely great Tiger on a Treadmill.

Fix has worked in locales ranging from an oil rig to a strip club (his actual job there, however, was not specified, leading one to ponder the possibilities). Overall, however, this is a great CD. It’s definitely one that I’d buy – maybe even pay double for – and the South Africa-born Fix is an artist to watch out for. Go see him when he performs in San Francisco.check out the video HERE.

My Happy Gun - Noir rock from NYC

My Happy Gun is a New York City band made up of members of other NYC bands– Foxglove, SHLSHKD, Rockethouse and Oscura, to name only a few. They sound like they’re from some other place, a place where Link Wray, Nick Cave, and X all hang out and swap tales of adventure. This makes sense in a city where so many people come from somewhere else. Garage, surf, spaghetti-western, and all manner of rock ’n’ roll are rolled into a tasteful mix.

My Happy Gun rocks with style. They remember the music that gave birth to what would eventually become “alternative music” and use the best parts to create a very modern, if often dark, cinematically
musical landscape.

Reggae in New York City

Rockie Dan is a reggae band made up of a diverse group of seasoned professional musicians. The band performs reggae original songs showcasing Rockie Dan, lead vocalist and showman, 2 guitars, bass, piano, drums, sax, trumpet, trombone and 3 female back-up vocalists.

All the songs are very melodic with catchy hooks that keep people humming the melodies for days. The songs vary in theme. One is a story about finding love, another is about holding onto love and a third song is about taking advantage of favorable circumstances that may not last. The remainder of the songs shed light on the spiritual and other daily routines in human life.
