LA STRADA AT THE MERCURY LOUNGE

La Strada returns to the Mercury Lounge, Thursday, November 21st, to celebrate their friends, Frances' record release. Here's more about La Strada: Brooklyn band La Strada offers a big, genre-bending stew of indie rock, European folk, and baroque pop. The L Magazine, which named La Strada as a NYC Band You Need to Hear, says, "One of the most promising bands in the city. Think Beirut and Neutral Milk Hotel, with more of a focus on traditional Americana. "The seven-piece band's sound is driven by soaring vocal harmonies, accordion, acoustic and electric guitars, bass, drums, and a 3-piece string section of violin, viola and cello. Formed in the spring of 2007, the band is currently completing its first EP and focuses on playing to the lively audiences of Brooklyn and Manhattan,“ at venues like Mercury Lounge, Southpaw, Union Hall, and The Music Hall of Williamsburg. La Strada is the romance of old-world instrumentation through new world amplification, transporting audiences to the hills of the Balkans, a street corner in Paris, and back to your window overlooking the Brooklyn skyline. As the Huffington Post says, "La Strada offers up the best of the New York indie scene: interesting music made by talented people who have a point of view and a love for what they do."

Low Water collaborates with sleepdance for video

Low Water has just released the first video from their upcoming CD "Twisting the Neck of the Swan" (Jan '09). "Go" was choreographed by Stephanie Sleeper of modern-dance troupe sleepdance, and features 12 dancers in several rooftop locations throughout Brooklyn. It was shot and directed by bassist Dave Rubin. Along with organizing the dancers, Sleeper designed and hand-made the costumes and also helped in the final editing process. She also brought in collaborator Stephanie Griffin, a founding member of the Momenta Quartet, who put together a string section especially for the score (which was written by Rubin as well). The video is a live-action representation of the CD cover, and is reminiscent of 70's and 80's Hipgnosis album cover design. A CD release event will take place Thurs., Dec. 4th at Public Assembly in Williamsburg, and will also feature Heidi Sidelinker, Rich Girls, Breaking Laces and a special performance by sleepdance.

The KWJ Trio Release Their Debut Album

"Can We Go Back Where We Began?", The Karl Walters Jr Trio's new album, sounds just like a dream date you'd have with Karl himself. Dig:

1. Karl shows up to your house half an hour late. Before you can express your displeasure, Karl angrily kisses your neck. You're shocked, excited, and curious.

2. Karl whisks you off to the local YMCA. It's karaoke night. Karl sings a hearttfelt version of "Me So Horny" and dedicates it to you. You're touched...and aroused.

3. During the delicious Taco Bell dinner Karl treats you to, an old woman presents you with a collection of bootlegged DVDs. Karl valiantly buys you a copy of "Fantastic Four: Rise of The Silver Surfer." How could Karl have known the arson that led to the formative years you spent in juvenile hall was enflamed by a fixation on The Human Torch? Karl's gift DVD is both thoughtful and seductive.

4. Amid the swirling delight of King Cobra in the park, Karl pulls you close to confess a deep, dark secret, to reveal the crux of his being: he isn't wearing any underwear. You inspect. He wasn't lying.

5. After watching a serendipitously romantic episode of "Moesha", Karl again whisks you, only this time the destination is the attic room of his mother's house, or "Chatoad de Karl", as he calls it. He gallantly gives you your choice of top or bottom bunk. You wisely choose the top.

Miracles of Modern Science release free EP!

Miracles of Modern Science began life in 2004 as a sea-shanty-spouting string band at Princeton University, formed by orchestra drop-outs and jazz band rejects. In 2005, they found a drummer and plugged their miniature orchestra into amps.

MOMS pieced together their debut EP in dorm rooms and basements over the course of the past year. Its combination of post-rock explosions, anthemic pop vocals, and antique textures makes for a sound lost in time – this is how a Civil War string band might have imagined the music of the far-distant 1980s, or how Devo might have entertained at a Lincoln benefit.

Now they are releasing it as a free download on Amazing Wow, a new label that rejects the notion of "piracy," and puts out all of its releases for free online.

You can download the EP HERE.

Album Release Party Nov. 14th @ Rockwood--midnight

From the LES: "Sexy, up-and-coming rock phenoms, the Hot Left, with their mysteriously provocative name, played hard and hot, and left the audience screaming last night at Arlene's Grocery. And for your audioerotic pleasure, cds were offered as gratis with handmade drawings all featuring inspiration from the Hot Left diaries - we blushingly tried asking for explanations, but they weren't telling." -Demetria Chappo

- Viva la Voxys!

"Formed in New York City in 2008, The Voxys' sound has been described as '60s-inspired garage pop. This four piece consists of Julian Colin Sylvester and Trevor Murphy on guitars and vocals and with an air-tight rhythm section provided by William McCormack on bass and Chad Flewwelling on drums. With influences from British invasion to Madchester. These lads make no nonsense music that they want to listen to."

Lola Johnson Pre-releases Track on 2009 Album

November 2, 2008 (New York, NY) - Radian Records announces the anticipated release of A Scene Unseen, a new album by East Village artist Lola Johnson. Although the album will not be released until January 2009, the final track of the album, 'Til Another Day has a special significance for the November elections. Johnson's next live performance will be Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at 8:00 p.m. in R Bar on the Bowery.

This is what Johnson had to say about the track, 'Til Another Day: I only hope that this song is taken as a realistic representation of society. It's for the young and old, those struggling to find an identity amongst millions. We're being put in a box, without even knowing "Why?" and "What box?". During this election and ones before, we're always settling, choosing the better over the worst. Our settled upon choice forces Us to put trust in people who divide Us more than bring Us together.

While outrunning convenient genre labels, Lola journeyed from singer-songwriter open mics in Boston, got Anti-folk at the Sidewalk Cafe, sang the blues in Baltimore, and jazz on the Bayou. A troubadour’s life is one of meaningful transience, where Lola has had her share. Darting between city and country life, she has adeptly dodged the trappings of each in the nick of time. Together, Radian Records and Lola Johnson have worked with many other inspiring musicians to create a timeless and inspired body of work that fans and new listeners can look forward to.

Bell Hollow release free remixes on RCRD LBL

Brooklyn dream-pop band Bell Hollow have issued three free remix mp3s on RCRD LBL: www.bellhollow.com /remixes. The latest, "Getting On In Years (Phofo Remix)" by indie-pop / hip-hop producer Phofo (Paul Barman, MF Doom, Brittle Stars, I Am the World Trade Center, My Favorite, CBS cartoon Sushi Pack, etc.), revving up the song to a groovy froth spiced with peppy horns and a summery dance beat. As with the previous two remixes in this series (Nine Inch Nails remixer Halo33's sombre, cinematic reworking of "Eyes Like Planets," and synth-pop duo Project Jenny, Project Jan's enchanting orchestral take on "Copper Crayon"), this track is available for free download on RCRD LBL, and will also be featured on Bell Hollow’s digital-only "Foxgloves Extras" EP (five03 Records) next month, along with unreleased studio tracks and a forthcoming remix of "Lowlights" by Cruel Black Dove. After two regional North American tours during 2008, and a recent unplugged performance at the Bush Tetras benefit in NYC, Bell Hollow are busy working on new demos.

The Clown Prince is music4eva///music4now

Frontman CHiF received critical acclaim with his debut EP LiL CHiF “Soon Come” and has now turned the heat up with this sophomore release.

Described as AfRaPunK, it blends punk rebellion with hip hop swagger all mixed in an East London melting pot.

“Put Em Up” celebrates being young, going out with your mates and generally having a good time, with big drums, catchy lyrics and thrashy guitars.

Having already gotten London talking, CHiF has shifted his attention across the pond. With a new New York band (got twins for drums n bass) and rock child Zach on guitars, the gigs are swinging.

Come check us out at Fortune Cookie Lounge on Thurs 30th Oct.
