VOICEsVOICEs – Sounds Outside EP (Self release) - From Los Angeles, wrapped in rather good looking artwork and apparently recorded live in an art gallery – kind of sounds like it, really sparse and open sound that echoes around the room in a spaced-out manner, that dramatic space that Radiohead sometimes have – the sound works, it all works. VOICEsVOICEs are a two piece atmospheric instrumental experience, a warm seductive edgy ambient experience, they really do sound like the inside of a rather intriguing gallery that may have a few things hidden in the darker recesses – the sound of somewhere a little different anyway. There are voices there, intriguing voices, mostly an instrumental experience and the sound suggest low lights, strange backdrops, other worlds, stop motion, abstract though, sensual warmth, creative challenge – a warm positive low-key sense of jubilant spiritual being and all rather good, rather special actually, once you let it breathe and envelope you, once you open up and allow it in.

Automatic Drawing is a 5-piece indie rock band that hails from all over West LA. In 2007 they began writing songs full of boy-girl harmonies and melodic guitar bliss. One year later they entered the studio to record The Captain and the Sea, a 5-song EP in equal parts strange melancholy and short bursts of pop. The EP will be officially available Saturday, Oct 11 at the Viper Room, where there will undoubtedly be random organ sounds, folk songs, sing-alongs, rightings of wrongs, and as always -- the unexpected.

Paul Avion grew up in New Orleans, where he always assumed he'd spend his whole life. It was a disappointing idea, especially as he'd written a number of songs, most of which had come to him in dreams.
So when his high school friend and bandmate Ben Mumphrey moved to L.A. (to become a producer behind Frank Black & The Catholics' Devil's Workshop, and now the new Breeders CD), Paul decided maybe it was worth a shot going there himself.
In L.A., he's bumped into a lot of people who have given him a helping hand, from Tanya Haden (Haden Triplets, Silversun Pickups) to Shana Levy (Let's Go Sailing), and others.
After several lonesome, soul-searching jaunts, including an exploration of the underground Parisian club scene, he hooked up with super-musicians Zachary Ginder, Andrew Rivera, and Zandro Urbiztondo, to form Par Avion Band.
They now bring you a number of these songs, originally heard in Paul's sleep, from "Pop Music United" and "Stand Up, Be A Man," as well as all-new compositions written by the band. They hope you like them.

End roulette is a alternative indie rock band from LA that not many people know about because they just changed their name! the band, formerly known as hazelden, was started in 2007 by singer, songwriter and guitar player mary jane snow. the early success of their first EP "deadstock rock" prompted legal action by the hazelden drug rehab center in MN for dilution and trademark infringement and so, just prior to an appearance on an MTV VMA broadcast, the band changed its name. end roulette are currently writing their first album, starting with fan favorite "paper bullets." the band had just finished shooting a music video for the last hazelden song "to live and die in LA" which you can watch at www.youtube.com/endroulette.

Unlike the indie-rock norm, every song The Fling has released so far has exhibited a form of variety that makes one unified comparison impossible and consequently irrelevant. They all remain in the realm of throwback rock, pop, and folk, but the songwriting in itself showcases a variety of structural tendencies and revolving aspects of production that makes the cumulative listening experience vastly unpredictable. Based out of Long Beach, California, the four-piece recorded and produced their debut EP, Ghost Dance, in March of this year.

Like many groups of a similar vein before them, The Fling’s decision to release a concise EP before a debut album mainly attributes to their personalized value of critical reception. Like White Denim’s early output, a bunch of tracks on The Fling’s debut EP are certainly good enough to serve as standouts on an eventual album. “Lonely Fool” is one of them, featuring an electric guitar progression with tinges of folk and blues aided over a lyrical perspective that highlights the pitfalls of social anxiety. “‘Cause I don’t think I even wanna step foot outside today,” the brothers sing in near-unison, bringing shades of Supergrass into the mix. “‘Cause I don’t really want to see anyone.” The track is actually the most melodically simplistic on the EP, but that also allows it to be arguably the most accessible and instantaneously awarding.

Keep an eye out for this young four-piece. If Ghost Dance is any indication, they could be making a sudden surge like White Denim by year’s end. -Mike Mineo

Secret Alphabet is a band formed in Los Angeles, CA in September of 2006. After playing a couple art galleries and warehouse/loft parties- the line up was stable enough to record an e.p. in the Fall of 2007. The e.p. is noisy, atmospheric, melodic... moody... and self-released in July of 2008. Secret Alphabet is currently playing in and around the Los Angeles area organizing their first West Coast tour. City City is an Electronic Rock band that makes energetic music. They infuse different time signatures and other weird elements to make a very intense ADD sound. Three brothers from other mothers (and fathers) got together, from the OC, ChiTown and DC,, to create a miscellaneous collection of musical works aka OLIO. Inspired by everything from Black Sabbath to Barry White these guys stir up an eclectic blend of music from hip-hop to funk, soul to rock and a dash of pop and serve it up nice and hot

Other People write songs that make you feel like you are watching a movie. Through your ears. On their forthcoming EP "your ticket out" each song reminds the listener of a time and a place, of the old neighborhood you grew up in, regret and betrayal, triumph and defeat and returning home after the whole world comes down around you. These memories may or may not have actually existed, but once you hear it, it's forever in your consciousness. The second track "Catch" is a train ride through long echoic tunnels which open up into endless wheat fields, full of bright bouncing guitars which transition into creamy rhythmic phrases topped off with shifting vocals and moods above a constant drum beat.

SAVAK will be recording their new CD entitled, Pleasure Dagger, with Pete Mills, whose credits include work with Dave "Rave" Ogilvie (Skinny Puppy, NIN), GGGarth Richardson (Rage Against the Machine), and Mike Plotnikoff (Kiss). Pete has also toured with the likes of Motley Crue, Scorpions, Buckcherry, and more. Pete will bring a lot to the table in terms of production and creative ideas. SAVAK will begin recording in early summer with a release date TBD.

The Abe Lincoln Story is a ten-piece "big band" with horns and backup singers. It began in 1994, at the start of the Silverlake scene, and was Spaceland's first Monday night residency. The band has 2 CDs out and is bigger and better than ever!

Every once in a while, a band comes along that is so real, so honest, that you can't help but relate to them. The Histories are one of these bands. Maxwell Strachan is the mastermind behind this catchy raw emotive batch of songs concerned with the tales of losing friends, falling love, and living life. Maxwell became known in the LA music scene as the guitarist and keyboard player for the local pop band Yes Means No. After he moved to Berkley for school, The Histories myspace appeared with very rough recordings including "For Friends" which won Maxwell the hearts of everyone who heard it. His first EP, "There is Absolutely No Difference Between Anybody", tells the story of leaving home and the life you knew and having to grow up. "I find my music in things like getting old and dealing with that—the boredom and insignificance that develops after high school".
