All-ages SF venues under siege

"Rock n Roll is not a crime," via Burrito Justice.
Via the OCMD and the Bay Bridged - this is too important to ignore. An article in the San Francisco Chronicle outlines some extremely annoying (disturbing!) attempts by the state Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) to cut down on underage drinking by aggressively targeting our all-ages music venues, including Bottom of the Hill, Great American Music Hall, Slim's, and Cafe du Nord.
These venues are currently allowed to have all-ages shows because they serve food (a reasonable ABC regulation). Food offsets alcohol. It's a good thing, no matter how old you are. And really, the system works, whether it's tied to food or not. These all-ages shows at some of the City's most respected and well-established venues have no reputation for being out of control, or even for providing opportunity for San Francisco's underage population to get illegally drunk and crazy. If anything, it's old fogies like us with expendable incomes and appetites for tasty booze that the ABC should be worried about.
Point being, the ABC is going after these venues by attempting to enforce the following rule: that food sales at these particular venues must match alcohol sales. We all know that these City venues serve food, but that's not where they make the majority of their money at the end of each night (which is not a statement against the quality of the food - people just don't really go to these shows to eat).
Silver lining: it's not over quite yet, as this new ABC jurisdiction is being challenged by our elected officials. To help out in the meantime, Great American Music Hall and Slim's are selling the stylin' "Rock n Roll is Not a Crime" T-shirts that you can see pictured above. $20 will make you look super cool and "will go to support our ongoing legal bills and help to keep Slim's and GAMH alive."
Stay tuned for more info. Ugh.

agreed Posted by Anna on April 14th, 2009 And it's not even like these venues have all-ages shows every night. In fact, it seems like the majority of the GAMH, BOTH, etc. shows are 21+. This is Stupid Posted by Vague Panther on April 14th, 2009 Unbelievable - D.C. went through this years ago and it's an issue that continues to pop up. People of all ages deserve to hear good music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TFNXUsr7gM
