New Music- Carta
This weekend I had the opportunity to listen to a new album from an SF band called Carta. What was once the instrumental bedroom project of Kyle Monday, Carta has evolved over the period of several years into a performing band with consistent members, and now a full length debut titled The Glass Bottom Boat, out on Resonant in August.
One of the first things I noticed about The Glass Bottom Boat was its pointedly straight-forward nature. The predominantely down-tempo and almost entirely instrumental songs are played expertly and seriously, with no room given over to electronic tampering or frivilous noise. Beginning on Kavan and continuing thoughout the album, Carta's music is anchored by a delicately looping guitar, with the gradual introduction of piano, drums, bass, organs, cellos, and percussion. However, even when all the instruments are sharing the sound space, none seem to overtake the guitar's constant and mysterious presence.
After moving from the first track into the slightly rougher second and third songs, Burning Bridges returns with a quiet melancholy, freed of the drums, and seems to provide a good spot for thought before sliding into Simultane, marked by the return of confident percussion. Listening to The Glass Bottom Boat as a whole, it is obvious how much care went into the overall composition of the album Each song seems to both book-end and inform the others, yet never do they seem to bleed together.
Near the end of the album on the title track, we get the first and only string of vocals. In keeping with the flowing and often eerie feel of the rest of the album, Sarah Bell's voice is largely fluid, yet meticulously contained. Despite Sarah's voice being a good fit with the instrumentation, the vocals feel a little unsettleing at first, after so much time having passed without them. In many ways I felt temporarily removed from the content of the rest of the album, until the ninth minute of the song when the vocals subsided and the drums re-entered.
Overall, Carta's Glass Bottom Boat is an extremely well crafted work of instrumental music. The songs are diverse enough that by the closing track I was not at all worn out or feeling lost. Each composition stands well on its own, and together they create an extremely cohesive body of sound driven emotion.
