Don't waste studio time!
and... do you need a producer
?

Making a recording is a tangle of pragmatism, technology, alchemy and faith. As is the case with any creative venture, you cannot know what you'll get for your efforts until you go through the process; it's always a gamble. Having a plan and a budget can be really useful.

No Place Like Home - part 1
home vs. professional studios

When recording devices were the size of washing machines, having a professional studio in one's bedroom or apartment was a little impractical. With the advent of hard disk recording, sometimes the most practical place in the world to record is, in fact, one's home. My how things have changed! by B. Kapham - Article
No Place Like Home - part 2
home vs. professional studios

One of the things I like best about working in a great studio is having immediate access to mass quantities of obscure, expensive equipment. If you've never been in the luxuriant position of having more great gear than you can use, you haven't yet fulfilled your destiny as a recording engineer.

"On Tour" tour presented by imeem and Red Stripe

On Tour tourThe "On Tour" Tour . . .

July 24th, 2008 (San Francisco, CA)

Imeem and Red Stripe present The Paper Sons and Raised By Robots two-week West Coast Tour.

Conceived in November of 2006, Raised By Robots colluded in a San Francisco basement to carefully craft a jangly rock stew which would be unleashed upon an unsuspecting public. Although the music has a foundation in Indy Rock, it also pulls queues from a wide range of influences including Hip-Hop, Honky-Tonk, and Grunge. The band will be embarking on their first ever West Coast tour to promote their debut LP The Auctioneer, and to play a few new tunes from their upcoming EP to be recorded this fall.

Often compared to bands such as Cursive, Deftones and Sparta, The Paper Sons hit the road this summer to bring their unique brand of vocal harmony and rhythmic loud rock to the cities of the West Coast. The Paper Sons are taking a break from recording this summer to tour in support of their freshman release “Fine Line” available at your favorite e-retailer or from the band’s official website www.thepapersons.com.

Big-Assed Rock Show, Friday, Aug. 1 - North Beach

Audio: Interiors (MP3, 3.34mb) Download Now

By: Young Has Beens Website

Young Has Beens"Who are these guys? They sound like they're constipated" -- Jake "The Ram" Jenkins

"That bass player guy looks just like my sister's ex-husband's brother-in-law!" -- Barbara Walters

"Hey. Is this your beer? I think I just drank out of your beer. Sorry about that." -- Larry King

Young Has Beens are five ex-clergyman with bad haircuts and a penchant for dried shrimp. If you can handle the smell, consider getting as close to the stage as possible to witness their signature "bullpucky" hijinx. The saying goes, "It's only rock and roll", but this particular rock and roll turns kittens into cargo pants, as you will soon see. Also, certain members of the band regularly combust, so please refrain from wearing Rayon apparel at their performances. Next show: Friday, August 1st at Broadway Studios in North Beach.

By: Pope of Yes Website

Pope of YesPope of Yes is a new project of recent San Francisco transplant Sean Mabry (maus haus), Joe Miller (The Lovely Public), and Sofia Bell (Squeeky Rice) . Pope of Yes brings a huge and powerful performance, delivering an imaginitive sound much larger than 3 people.

"You'd be hard-pressed to find another band/artist in the current San Francisco indie scene that's tackling such a highly evolved level of compositional experimentation. The sheer symphonic grandeur of his songs dwarf the dynamic range of your average indie band. Each song is a crammed cornucopia of sounds: horns, strings, synths, distorted pianos, kalimbas, YOU NAME IT! All of it darting and weaving and unfolding..." -Wiretap Music

Dani Paige Band with Leon Russell @ Independent

Audio: Love That Fire (MP3, 3.65mb) Download Now

By: Dani Paige Band Website

Dani Paige BandWith so many big, impressive voices being heard in music these days, it takes something more to stand out. Dani Paige offers an example of what "something more" sounds like. Besides having a rich, supple, powerful voice, her gift for songwriting places her in a completely different category from the overhyped karaoke singers that populate the contemporary musical landscape.

Ms. Paige and songwriting partner/guitarist Jesse DeCarlo, with drummer Jenn Schaaf and bassist Rhonda Kinard, have created something that fans of the rock-soul-R&B tradition have been craving for years: songs that are catchy but not disposable, and show genuine musicianship without sounding clinical. Like the great soul music of days past, the choruses grab your ear and don't let go, while the rhythm pulls you out of your seat and makes you want to dance. But unlike a retro act, the Dani Paige Band focuses these influences through a lens of individual passion and experience to create something fresh and exciting.

a decent animal is new in town...come to amnesia

a decent animala decent animal is a swaggering atmospheric rock trio from charleston, sc recently relocated to san fran. ADA was formed in '05 by long time band mates JK Nicholson and RG Weld. After an enlightening recording experience the duo added GP Baerreis and immediately the band began writing new material. The songs began telling longer stories with more sophisticated instrumentation. Soon they would solidify their collaborative writing style, developing a genuinely unique sound. ADA has never really felt like it belonged to a specific genre allowing them the freedom to write songs that are fiercely personal. With a well established sound in place ADA took to the highway touring extensively over the last year sharing the stage with many great national and local acts such as Band of Horses, Love as Laughter, Modest Mouse, Lake Trout, Slowrunner, the Helio Sequence and more. Live the three members play as many as six instruments at a given time keeping their audience visually engaged at all times. Find a decent animal and love it.

  College Radio Stations
what can they do for my band?

In this day and age, we should be thankful that college radio still exists, static-y and awkward though it may be. While commercial frequencies pump the same boring playlists into every city, and in many cases have ceased to provide live, local DJs to give the station any personality (be it comments on local bands, events, or even the weather), college radio provides unique, local voices to the airwaves and internet. - read the rest of the article here
